Nostalgic Childhood Reads

Author: Dr. Seuss
Genre: Fiction
Grades: Pre-K - 5

"I do not like them Sam-I-am. I do not like green eggs and ham."
This repetitive phrase helped me as a disinterested reader become a participating one. Dr. Seuss' rhyme and rhythm were engaging as a child and beginning reader. I remember this Kindergarten lesson well because it was fun to speak in unison while filling in the words and making predictions of our read aloud.  My teacher made this a memorable book for the class by making and having us try real green eggs and ham just like the character in the book. She brought the book to life.

"If you give a mouse a cookie, he's going to ask for a glass of milk."
This book was an enjoyable read to keep going back to because of the sequencing in it's storyline. It's appealing to children to make predictions of what could come next. As well it is comedic in where the storyline leads full circle. This can be used in and out of the classroom.

 "Click!"
This was my first introduction to a series. I was hooked by how the lead character was around my age, had an interesting talent used to solve mysteries and had a continuous storyline. Her photographic memory was fascinating to me being that it was my first time hearing what a photographic memory was. It was a talent that I wish I could take on myself.  This is great to utilize in the classroom because it can help a learner draw important details from a text used to make connections and help learners remember what they have read.
