The War That Saved My Life
Author: Kimberly Brubaker Bradley

This is the story of Ada and her younger brother's triumphant journey to safety during World War 2. The pair lived in a small loft with their Mum. Ada, unlike other kids, had a "defect," a clubbed foot. It prevented her from a comfortable way of living. But that's not the only thing that held her back. Her Mum convinced her that she was doing everyone else a service by keeping her locked away in the loft. As the war threatened to reach London, all the kids in the village were shipped off to England to live with other families. Ada, not meant to be so fortune, escaped with her brother to safety away from the war and her Mum. This narrative allows us to understand the war on a different level. Not only does this book sprinkle facts from history on WWII, but it is introducing us to the emotions that people felt at that time. Historical fiction does just that. You will see propaganda specific and accurate of that time. The rations and blackouts they enforced. As well, the attitude of that time. You will fall in love with Ada. Who was hard and rebelled from the norm, but softened with the love she was shown from Susan. The woman that was forced to take her in and chose to have her stay.

Coming On Home Soon
Author: Jacqueline Woodson

This is the story of a young girl finding comfort from her grandma and a kitten while her mother is away working on the railroad. In the beginning Ada fights back tears longing for her mother. However, through the comfort, love, and purpose she finds in taking care of the kitten and reminder from her grandmother of her mother's love, time passes by a little easier while her mother is away. Historically accurate to WWII, jobs were available to women of color that were traditionally male jobs, while the men were away at war. The story accurately depicts the culture of the time. It even addresses issues of race, gender, and social class. The themes of family and hardships, which are relatable today, draw the reader in emotionally, creating a deeper meaning when learning about the lifestyles from a historical time. The illustrations are beautifully done with great details. I think this helps young readers make a real connection that even though this is historical fiction, it is realistic.
